From Iconic Buildings to Human Experience: Why Architecture Is Turning Away From the Object

Architecture is increasingly being evaluated by what a building allows people to experience rather than by how effectively it produces a recognizable image. This does not mean architectural form, identity, or beauty have become unimportant. It means those qualities are being judged alongside comfort, movement, daylight, acoustics, adaptability, social use, landscape, and what happens after the building opens.
For owners and developers, the distinction has practical consequences. A building conceived primarily as an object can still succeed operationally and experientially, but a memorable exterior does not guarantee that its floor plates work well, its public spaces attract people, its interiors remain comfortable, or its program can adapt. Conversely, architecture that appears restrained from a distance may produce considerable value through the quality of everyday occupation. The shift is therefore better understood as a change in what counts as architectural performance. The object remains, but experience is becoming a more explicit part of the brief.
That direction is visible across professional standards, architectural research, building evaluation, and contemporary practice. The American Institute of Architects' Framework for Design Excellence asks designers to consider physical, mental, and emotional well-being, occupant comfort, access to nature, acoustics, movement, social interaction, and inclusion alongside environmental performance. Research in neuroarchitecture is meanwhile examining how people perceive and respond to spatial environments through movement, cognition, emotion, and multiple senses. The result is not a new architectural style. It is a different way of defining the problem.
The Architectural Object Is Only One Part of the Building
Architecture has always been experienced physically, but the culture surrounding architecture can place disproportionate attention on images. A building is commonly encountered first through a photograph, rendering, elevation, or aerial view. Design competitions and development presentations can reinforce this tendency because form is relatively easy to communicate visually. Complex qualities such as acoustic comfort, spatial sequence, thermal conditions, material tactility, adaptability, and patterns of occupation are harder to capture in one image.
Architect and theorist Juhani Pallasmaa has been one of the clearest critics of this visual emphasis. In The Eyes of the Skin: Architecture and the Senses, first published in 1996 and released in a fourth edition in 2024, he argues that architecture has become disproportionately dominated by sight at the expense of the other senses and the embodied experience of space. This distinction becomes clearer when comparing a rendering with an occupied building.
The rendering can show proportion, material, light, furniture, and intended atmosphere. It cannot fully communicate the sound of the room, the temperature beside the glazing, how intuitive the entrance feels, whether people choose to sit there, how materials feel at close range, whether afternoon glare becomes uncomfortable, or whether the circulation makes sense to someone visiting for the first time. Those qualities emerge through occupation.
For an owner, that means design review should examine the building from at least two perspectives simultaneously. One is the building as a physical and visual composition. The other is the building as a sequence of conditions experienced over time. The second perspective can change the first.
A desire for comfortable daylight can influence façade depth and orientation. A need for intuitive movement can change the core and circulation. Social interaction can affect stair placement and common areas. Acoustic requirements can alter program adjacencies. Views can influence floor plate organization. Adaptability can affect structural grids, ceiling heights, servicing, and partition systems. Human experience is therefore not an interior-design layer added after the architecture has been established. It can influence the architecture from the beginning.
The Bilbao Effect Demonstrated Both the Power and Limits of the Icon
Few projects illustrate the power of architectural identity more clearly than Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. The building opened in 1997 and became closely associated with Bilbao's transformation from an industrial city into an international cultural destination. The phrase "Bilbao effect" subsequently came to describe the idea that a major cultural building by a prominent architect could catalyze tourism, investment, and urban revitalization.
The museum's continuing economic significance is substantial. According to the institution, it received 1,305,003 visitors in 2025 and estimated that its activities generated €782.3 million in demand in the Basque Country and contributed €676.7 million to regional GDP that year. The lesson, however, is easily oversimplified.
Research on iconic architectural developments has questioned whether comparable projects consistently produce a similar "Bilbao effect." A study published in European Planning Studies examined iconic architectural developments in North America and notes that the validity of the concept remains debated.
A Harvard case study of Bilbao makes the distinction even clearer. It argues that attributing Bilbao's revival principally to the Guggenheim provides an incomplete account. The city's transformation also depended on extensive collaboration among public entities and a broader strategy developed in response to economic, political, and social crisis.
For owners, this is a useful correction. A striking building can create identity. It can attract attention. Under the right conditions, it can become part of a larger economic and urban strategy. But architectural distinctiveness is not a substitute for location, program, transportation, operations, financing, public investment, market demand, or the quality of the experience once visitors arrive. The useful question for a contemporary project is therefore not whether the building should be iconic. It is what architectural identity is expected to accomplish and how that identity supports the actual use of the project.
Experience Is Becoming Something Designers Can Investigate
One reason human experience is receiving greater attention is that it is becoming easier to study. Environmental psychology has long examined relationships between people and their surroundings. More recently, neuroarchitecture has brought neuroscience, cognitive research, environmental psychology, and architecture into closer conversation.
A 2022 methodological review describes neuroarchitecture as an emerging field focused on brain dynamics associated with action and interaction in built environments. Another study describes architectural experience as fundamentally embodied, arguing that perception develops through interaction between the body and the environment rather than through detached visual observation alone. Research has even examined how different interior geometries influence emotional and neurophysiological responses while participants move through simulated architectural environments. The field remains developing.
A 2026 systematic review examined 32 primary neuroarchitecture studies published since 2017 and found increasing research into attention, comfort, welfare, spatial orientation, virtual reality, physiological measurement, and other aspects of human-space interaction. The authors also found important limitations, including relatively few empirical validations in real-world environments. That caution matters.
Architecture should not be reduced to simplistic claims that a particular curve, color, material, or ceiling height produces a predictable emotional response. People differ, activities differ, cultural contexts differ, and buildings contain many environmental variables simultaneously. The more defensible lesson is methodological. Buildings can be evaluated through the people who actually use them. Surveys, interviews, observation, behavioral mapping, environmental measurements, mockups, virtual reality, post-occupancy evaluation, and other methods can provide information that a conventional visual design review cannot. For owners making substantial investments, this creates an opportunity to define desired experiences early and test whether the design is likely to support them.
Human-Centered Design Begins With Movement
A floor plan is often reviewed as a static drawing, but occupants do not experience buildings from above. They move through them. Arrival, threshold, orientation, compression, expansion, stairs, corridors, views, pauses, destinations, and transitions accumulate into an understanding of the building. The AIA's Framework for Design Excellence explicitly recognizes this relationship, noting that movement and architecture are closely linked because users experience space through movement.
SANAA's Rolex Learning Center at EPFL provides a particularly clear example. The building contains approximately 20,000 square meters within a largely continuous spatial environment containing library collections, study areas, discussion spaces, restaurants, cafés, information services, and outdoor spaces. Instead of organizing these functions through conventional stacked floors and corridors, SANAA created a landscape of gentle slopes, terraces, openings, and internal patios. The architecture changes how circulation is understood. Movement is not simply the route required to reach a room. It becomes part of the spatial experience.
People move upward and downward through the interior landscape, see activity across different levels, occupy edges, cross open areas, and establish different relationships with the surrounding campus. This strategy is highly project-specific. A continuous undulating floor would be inappropriate for many residential, healthcare, workplace, or commercial buildings. The transferable principle is different.
Circulation consumes area and construction resources in almost every building. If it is treated only as the shortest compliant route between destinations, it performs one task. When circulation also provides orientation, daylight, views, informal meeting opportunities, or spatial identity, the same area can contribute more to the experience of the building. Owners should therefore evaluate circulation as program rather than residual space.
Atmosphere Is Produced by Technical Decisions
Peter Zumthor's Therme Vals is frequently discussed in terms of atmosphere, but its sensory character is produced through specific architectural decisions.
The thermal baths, completed in 1996 in Vals, Switzerland, are organized as a sequence of stone spaces embedded partly within the hillside. Stone, water, temperature, acoustics, darkness, daylight, steam, enclosure, and movement work together to shape the experience.
The Pritzker Prize jury later emphasized the multisensory character of Zumthor's work, noting its engagement with touch, hearing, and smell as well as sight, and described his approach as anticipating and choreographing movement through and around buildings. The project is useful because "atmosphere" can otherwise become vague architectural language. In a built project, atmosphere has physical causes.
Light depends on openings, orientation, glazing, reflectance, shading, and electrical lighting. Sound depends on volume, geometry, surfaces, equipment, partitions, doors, and occupancy. Thermal experience depends on envelope performance, mechanical systems, solar exposure, air movement, humidity, and materials. Tactility depends on material selection, fabrication, detailing, temperature, and aging. This means experiential ambition should be translated into technical requirements. If an owner wants a quiet lobby, acoustic performance needs to influence volume, finishes, mechanical design, entry conditions, and adjacencies. If a residential project prioritizes natural light, façade design and unit depth need to be studied early. If a hospitality project depends on an intimate atmosphere, lighting control, acoustics, material reflectance, servicing, and furniture density may be as important as the formal concept. Experience becomes architecture when it is coordinated with the systems that produce it.
Grace Farms Shows What Happens When the Building Recedes
Some contemporary architecture takes an almost opposite position from the monumental icon. At Grace Farms in New Canaan, Connecticut, SANAA designed the River building as a long, low structure moving through an 80-acre landscape. The building's roof follows the site's topography and links a sequence of glass-enclosed program spaces. The architecture remains formally distinctive, but its effect depends heavily on the relationship between people and landscape. Grace Farms describes SANAA's approach as one in which the physical presence of architecture retreats to become a background for people, activities, objects, and landscape. Different spaces establish different relationships to ponds, wetlands, trees, courtyards, and changing seasonal conditions.
Architectural Record similarly described the project as practically part of nature, noting that the landscape was treated as part of the program rather than as decoration surrounding the building. This provides an important alternative to the assumption that architectural value must correspond with visual dominance. A project can establish identity by framing something other than itself.
A building might frame landscape, city views, social activity, daylight, art, historic fabric, or movement. The architectural intervention can remain highly controlled while allowing the subject of the experience to be something outside the building's formal image.
For owners, this can influence how project priorities are established. A waterfront residential development may derive considerable value from how units, terraces, circulation, and shared spaces frame water rather than from creating a complicated exterior form. A cultural building may allow art and public activity to dominate. A hospitality project may use architecture to intensify the experience of landscape. The building does not disappear. Its design effort is redirected toward relationships.
Human Experience Can Change How Existing Buildings Are Valued
The move away from architecture as a self-contained object is also relevant to adaptive reuse. An existing building may have limitations when judged against the expectations of new construction. Its structure may constrain planning. Its façade may not match a contemporary visual language. Floor-to-floor heights, column grids, windows, and circulation may already be established. Those conditions can also become the basis for a different architectural strategy.
Lacaton & Vassal's transformation of 530 dwellings at Grand Parc Bordeaux, completed with Frédéric Druot and Christophe Hutin, demonstrates this approach. Instead of replacing three occupied social-housing blocks, the project retained the existing structures and added generous winter gardens and balconies along the façades. Lacaton & Vassal identify 38,400 square meters of existing building within the transformed project.
The architectural ambition centered on improving the dwellings rather than replacing the buildings with a new formal statement. The Pritzker Prize's 2021 recognition of Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal emphasized this philosophy, describing their work as beginning with what already exists and prioritizing architecture that supports life, freedom, usefulness, and quality.
For owners evaluating existing property, this perspective can materially change feasibility discussions. The first question need not always be how completely the existing architecture can be erased.
The project team can investigate what the existing building already provides, including structure, embodied material, generous dimensions, useful floor plates, façade rhythm, historic character, or spatial qualities that would be costly to reproduce. Human experience can then become one criterion for determining what should remain and what should change.
Healthcare Makes Experiential Performance Difficult to Ignore
In healthcare-related environments, the consequences of experience become especially apparent. Maggie's cancer support centres provide a useful architectural model because their design brief explicitly addresses how visitors should feel.
Maggie's states that its centres share a carefully considered architectural brief while allowing each architect to interpret what a calming and welcoming environment means in response to a specific site. The organization describes the kitchen table as central to its design philosophy and emphasizes warm, bright, flexible spaces, community, gardens, and connection to nature.
Heatherwick Studio's Maggie's Yorkshire in Leeds translates those priorities into a building organized around three large planted volumes. Counselling rooms occupy protected spaces, while the areas between them accommodate the kitchen and more informal social activities. The precedent is relevant beyond healthcare.
It demonstrates what happens when the design brief begins with intended human conditions rather than a predetermined architectural image. "Private conversation" becomes an adjacency and acoustic question. "Community" becomes a question of seating, circulation, visibility, and shared program. "Connection to nature" affects section, glazing, landscape, and views. "Feeling welcome" affects the threshold, scale, materials, lighting, and arrival sequence. These are experiential ambitions translated into architecture.
An owner can use the same process in a different building type by defining what occupants need to be able to do and how different spaces should support those activities before deciding what the building should look like.
Experience Has Commercial Value, but It Should Not Be Reduced to a Formula
Human experience also matters because buildings compete. Residential projects compete for residents. Offices compete for tenants and employees. Hotels compete for guests. Retail environments compete with digital commerce. Cultural institutions compete for visitors' time. Universities compete for students and faculty. In many of these contexts, the experience of being physically present is part of the product.
Gensler's Experience Index research surveyed more than 4,000 people in the United States and conducted over 60 hours of ethnographic studies to investigate why people choose particular places and how design affects behavior. The research identified several modes of experience, including task, social, discovery, entertainment, and aspiration. The finding should not be interpreted as a formula for increasing real estate value. A beautiful lobby or landscaped terrace does not automatically produce higher rents, occupancy, or sales. It does suggest that the reasons people enter and remain in a place should influence design.
A lobby designed only for circulation may miss opportunities for social use. A retail environment optimized entirely for transaction may provide little reason to stay. An office designed exclusively around workstation efficiency may neglect the experiences employees seek when choosing to work somewhere other than home.
Owners should therefore define the desired user experience alongside conventional program metrics. That can include questions about duration, privacy, interaction, movement, daylight, views, noise, environmental control, landscape, and transitions between different activities. The objective is not experiential spectacle. It is alignment between the building and the reasons people use it.
Post-Occupancy Evaluation Changes What Counts as Success
A significant limitation of object-centered architecture is that the project is easily considered complete when construction ends and photography begins. An experience-centered approach requires another stage: finding out how the building actually works.
The Royal Institute of British Architects describes Post Occupancy Evaluation, or Building Performance Evaluation, as a process for comparing a client's intended outcomes with actual building performance. It can examine organizational and energy performance while helping project teams understand occupant needs and improve future projects.
This creates a different definition of architectural success. A circulation concept can be evaluated by observing how people move. A common space can be assessed by whether people actually use it. Daylight strategies can be compared with glare and shade use. Acoustic ambitions can be tested under real occupancy. Flexible spaces can be evaluated by whether operators can genuinely adapt them. This is particularly important for developers or institutions that repeatedly commission similar building types. The lessons from one apartment building, office, school, hotel, or cultural space can inform the next. Over time, design decisions become less dependent on assumption.
The research brief for this article specifically asks that architectural issues be connected to real building decisions, owner priorities, risks, opportunities, and what should be investigated next. Post-occupancy evaluation is one mechanism for making that connection measurable rather than rhetorical.
Form Still Matters
Turning toward human experience does not require turning against architectural form. Therme Vals is formally rigorous. The Rolex Learning Center is unmistakable. Grace Farms has a highly recognizable roof. Maggie's Yorkshire has a distinct architectural identity. The Guggenheim Bilbao remains one of the most recognizable cultural buildings of the last several decades. The difference is that form is being asked to do more than produce an image.
It can organize movement, frame landscape, moderate daylight, create privacy, establish social relationships, accommodate change, communicate entry, provide environmental comfort, and support the life of the building. The strongest projects often make these objectives difficult to separate. This also changes the owner's role during design.
Instead of approving architecture primarily through plans, elevations, renderings, and area schedules, owners can ask how important spaces will actually be experienced. What does someone see when entering? Where does daylight come from? Where can people pause? Which areas become noisy? What happens when occupancy changes? Which spaces allow privacy? What will materials feel like after ten years? Can the building accommodate uses that have not yet been anticipated? These questions do not diminish architecture's visual ambition. They give form more work to do.
Architecture Is Becoming More Accountable to Life Inside It
The move from iconic objects toward human experience should not be understood as the end of expressive architecture. There will continue to be monumental buildings, dramatic skylines, sculptural façades, cultural landmarks, and projects whose economic strategy partly depends on visual recognition. What is changing is the sufficiency of the image.
Research into cognition and environmental experience is expanding. Professional frameworks increasingly address well-being, social interaction, movement, acoustics, daylight, and inclusion. Post-occupancy evaluation makes it possible to compare design intention with actual use. Architects such as Peter Zumthor, SANAA, and Lacaton & Vassal demonstrate very different ways of placing experience, landscape, material, movement, and everyday life at the center of architectural decisions.
For owners, this produces a practical conclusion. Before a project's formal identity becomes fixed, the team should define the experiences the building needs to support and determine which architectural decisions produce them. Those decisions may affect the site plan, structure, floor plate, circulation, façade, landscape, environmental systems, material palette, and future adaptability.
A building will always remain an object in the city. Its deeper test begins when people enter it, occupy it, change it, and return to it over time. What is human-centered architecture?
Human-centered architecture evaluates design partly through the experience and needs of the people who use a building. It can consider movement, comfort, daylight, acoustics, accessibility, social interaction, environmental control, sensory experience, landscape, and adaptability alongside form and visual identity. The AIA's Framework for Design Excellence incorporates many of these issues within its approach to well-being.
Does human-centered architecture mean buildings should be visually simple?
No. Human-centered architecture is an approach to design rather than a visual style. Therme Vals, the Rolex Learning Center, Grace Farms, and Maggie's Yorkshire have very different architectural languages. Their relevance lies in how form, materials, circulation, landscape, light, and program contribute to the experience of occupants.
Is iconic architecture no longer valuable?
Iconic architecture can still provide substantial cultural, economic, and identity value. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao remains an unusually successful example. However, research cautions against assuming that a visually distinctive building alone will reproduce the economic transformation associated with Bilbao. Broader planning, investment, governance, program, location, and operations also matter.
How can architects evaluate human experience?
Methods can include interviews, observation, behavioral mapping, surveys, environmental measurements, mockups, virtual reality studies, and post-occupancy evaluation. RIBA recommends post-occupancy evaluation as a way to compare intended outcomes with actual building performance and occupant needs.
When should an owner define experiential goals?
Ideally during programming and early design. Priorities involving daylight, views, movement, privacy, acoustics, social interaction, landscape, and flexibility can affect fundamental decisions about massing, floor plates, structure, cores, circulation, façade systems, and mechanical design. Waiting until interior finishes are selected can substantially limit the available architectural responses.
